INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES COCONUT YIELD IN LAGOS STATE
The introduction of Information Technology (IT) has tremendously improved the yield of coconut in Lagos State. The commissioner of Agriculture Lagos State, made this assertion at the second edition of Lagos State enterprise day tagged “Technical and vocational Skills as a Gateway for Enterprise development”. According to the helmsman at the ministry of Agriculture, the State has witnessed an increase in the production of coconut. Annually the State has recorded 75 % increase as a result of the introduction of Information Technology. Before the introduction of IT, an average of 50 coconuts was realised annually, but the yield per coconuts tree has increased from between 120-200.
He called on the private sector to come on board as IT has brought innovation and research in coconut cultivation that can meet the increasing demand in the marketplace.
Areas of the State where Information Technology has contributed to the massive output in coconut production are Badagry, Lekki-Epe, and Ojo to mention few.
He sighted the Philippines as a nation where coconut cultivation has remained the main source of revenue generation and Lagos State wants to follow suit.
